Meridian Medical Staffing Announces New Partnership

Posted on Wednesday, August 29th, 2012 at 4:18 pm.

Meridian Medical Staffing, Inc., a Denver-based medical staffing agency has announced a new joint venture with Trinity Healthcare, Inc. Trinity Healthcare represents over 200 hospitals located in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Idaho, Oregon, and California. Trinity reached out to Meridian, one of the industry’s fastest-growing companies, to assist in their staffing needs, primarily their Travel Nursing positions that are increasingly becoming more and more difficult for the Farmington Michigan-based company to fulfill. “it is yet another area of the country that we felt qualified to deliver a high number of RNs and Allied healthcare professionals to” stated Mark Holloway, the Director of Client Services for Meridian Medical Staffing. “The Midwest, in particular has really been hit hard with an economic downturn, so naturally, hospitals in many of those states are finding it difficult to lure full-time RNs to their facilities,” Holloway continued. “That’s where we step in, by delivering a temporary 13-week solution to their permanent staffing shortfalls. We are truly excited about this partnership and have already had RNs start assignments in Iowa and California. “
If you would like to see a complete list of the new Trinity positions, as well as all of Meridian Medical Staffing’s currently available travel assignments, visit their website at www.MeridianMedicalStaffing.com

Opportunities for advancement

Posted on Friday, August 5th, 2011 at 6:52 pm.

Travel Nurses or Traveling Allied Healthcare Professionals work temporary contracts for hospitals or facilities. They work through an agency or as a independent contractor or as a seasonal employee for a facility.

The Shortage of Healthcare Professionals especially in Nursing provides a never ending supply of Travel Nurse Assignments all over and for some time to come.

Some Travelers have been Traveling for 20 years or more so it definitely can be done full-time as a career if you want or you can take breaks between assignments and see the world.

Are the pay and benefits the same as a regular nurse ?

Generally it is higher to attract healthcare professionals especially when you figure in the housing, travel reimbursements, bonuses. Alot of the Travel Nurse Companies also have the same or better benefits than many hospitals such as 401K, Health Insurance provided or a reimbursement, CEU reimbursements, Licensure reimbursement, Life Insurance , Disability, Loyalty Rewards, Referral Bonuses, Completion Bonuses, Tax Advantage Programs, Travel reimbursement, Contests, Extension Bonuses.

What areas of nursing can you practice in as a traveling nurse ?

ICU, OR, ER, Med-Surg , Dialysis, Psych, Cath, L&D, PEDS, PICU, STICU, Home Health, Management, Supervisors, Long Term Care, Nursing Home, Rehab, Step Down, Case Management, Nurse Practitioners, Specialty NPs, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Anesthesists, LPNs, LVNs, even CNAs at times & More.

Including other Healthcare Professions such as Respiratory Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Language Therapists, Social Workers, Doctors, Specialty Techs, Licensed Psych Techs, Radiology Techs & More.

What are the benefits and perks of being a traveling nurse ?

Increased financial reward.

Travel and seeing the World while you are still young and get paid.

Learning new skills and working in different settings.

Expand your horizons.

Freedom to take off between assignments and the money to do things.

Getting out of the rut and always experiencing new things in your work and environment.

Where do you live as a traveling nurse ?

Usually a nice private one bedroom apartment or larger depending on what you negotiate and what you need. Some people stay in extended stay suites which are like studios. Some people Travel in RVs.

Do you have to find your own housing ?

No, usually the company finds it but I recommend you to do searches and compare results. No one is more motivated than you in finding the best housing that the company can put in their name. Some people will take the housing stipend and find their own housing. It all depends on your situation.

For example an RVer will take the housing stipend generally. Myself, I prefer Not having the housing in my name. Your Housing or Housing stipend is Tax Free if you maintain a “Permanent Tax Home”.

Do you have to pay for your housing ?

No, you should not unless you are being paid as independent contractor where you receive just a pay rate which is to cover all your expenses and wage. As an independent contractor or subcontractor you can deduct many more expenses which are business expenses.

How long are the assignments for ?

Generally for 13 weeks at a time. Many people extend another thirteen weeks if the need is there and they like the facility. Contracts or Assignments can range anywhere from 4 weeks to 26 weeks and overseas assignments such as in Australia can range 1 -2 years.

Do you get to choose where you want to go ?

Yes depending on the availability of assignments among the 300 Plus Travel Nurse Companies in the United States. There are Companies in other Countries as well Generally the English Speaking Countries and the Middle East. The Department of Defense and the Military Contracts with Nurses and other Healthcare Professionals in other countries such as in Europe, Japan, Germany, Italy etc.

Can you choose any state in the country to work in ? Even Hawaii and Alaska ?

Yes but you need a license for the state you will work in. There is a group of States called the Nurse Compact that allows you to use your license in other compact states without any paperwork. The catch is you must be a resident of a compact state and maintain a license (RN or LPN) there.

For States outside of the Compact you need to apply for their license through that state’s board of nursing. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing Maintains a website with links to all State Boards of Nursing websites and/or phone numbers as well as a Map of Compact States. New states are gradually being added to the compact state list.

Many States are “walk thru” states meaning you can travel to their Board of Nursing and usually get your license the same day if your license(s) is in good standing. It’s best to contact the Board of Nursing to get up to date information by phone or through their website.

What about a transportation ?

Many people Travel by their own car so it is important to have a reliable vehicle. Some people fly and use a car rental or public transportation when the get there such as in bigger cities where parking can be expensive. Many Travel Nurse Companies will fly a person to their assignment and provide a car rental.

Some people drive their RV’s with a car towed behind or tow a Trailer. The Travel Reimbursements and Housing Stipend will usually cover the RV costs. I’ve been researching this myself but keep in mind it can reduce your flexibility to assignments and how close you can be to your facility.

Moving somewhere new and not knowing anyone could get pretty lonely, do traveling nursing companies offer some sort of programs to get you connected in your new city ?

Yes this is true and something to consider greatly before you travel. I have not seen any company programs myself and I have reviewed all websites of Travel Nurse Companies but there are many Travel Nurse Internet Forums where Travelers connect with other Travelers in different cities. Many Travelers travel with another Traveler for companionship sharing an apartment and saving money or still having separate apartments. I Travel with my wife but still miss home at times.

It’s important you research an area before you go there and talk with other Travelers through the Internet Forums who have been there. One person’s heaven is another person’s hell so take advice with a grain of salt. Also it’s important to have housing that is friendly and in a nice environment with amenities which can make up for a lot. I Travel with my laptop which helps me research the area, keep in touch with home, market myself for future assignments. One thing I have learned is that you never know 100% if you will like something until you have done it.

What do you like most about being a traveling nurse ?

I like the freedom, the financial reward, the actual traveling, the challenges, the being able to go places and do things I would never have done or been able to do. Just last December my wife and I went to Brazil to vacation after working in the Virgin Islands, then the Florida Keys and maybe a cruise next or just go home and take a break.

What are the opportunities for advancement as a traveling nurse ?

Actually, opportunities permanent and travel have come my way on a regular basis since I have been traveling. On my first assignment I was a Nurse Manager in AZ which was great opportunity then I worked as a RN Support/Educator for the VA in Los Angeles. It definitely opens doors to new opportunities.

4 Reasons to be a Traveling Nurse

Posted on Thursday, August 4th, 2011 at 6:41 pm.

Anne Woods

Personal and professional growth-not to mention a chance to explore the country-are awaiting nurses who decide it’s time to give travel nursing a try.

MAYBE YOU’VE ALWAYS HAD a secret yearning to see the country, to take off in search of adventure, wherever it might lead you. Maybe you’ve always stifled

that urge because you thought you were tied down by your job.

Maybe not anymore.

Now is the perfect time to reconsider, reconnect with your dreams, and realize that as a travel nurse, you could have both: the adventure of travel and the

career rewards of nursing.

With the nursing shortage deepening, health care facilities nationwide are scrambling to fill vacancies. Many are turning to travel nursing companies for

help-and that could make you a hot property. You know what you have to offer in travel nursing; maybe you’re wondering what travel nursing has to offer you.

Here are just a few reasons to consider becoming a travel nurse.

1. Expand your skills and knowledge base. Travel nursing “makes nurses better nurses,” says Brian Hekman, director of corporate communications for Cross

Country TravCorps. No matter where you work, he says, you’ll be exposed to different ways of looking at nursing practice and you’ll acquire new skills and

knowledge that will put some muscle into your curriculum vitae. As a travel nurse, you’ll have access to a variety of assignments around the country, from

small rural hospitals with only a few beds, where you’ll be a jack-of-all-trades, to large urban teaching centers, where you can specialize in the nursing

area of your choice. Each experience helps you grow as a nurse: At one hospital, for example, you could be learning the latest technique in

negative-pressure wound therapy; at another, you could be mentoring staff nurses unfamiliar with this technique.

2. Take control of your career. Feel as if you’re stagnating in your present position? Tired of the hospital politics? Travel nursing may be the perfect

opportunity for you to get a needed change of scenery, literally. You’re in the driver’s seat as a travel nurse: You have the freedom to decide what you

want your next assignment to be.

Hekman encourages nurses to “shop around for the atmosphere that you want.” Perhaps you’d like to gain experience working with sophisticated, high-tech

monitoring equipment or exposure to advanced, cutting-edge procedures your current position can’t offer. Or maybe you’re attracted to the slower pace and

greater patient contact that a smaller hospital could offer. Working with your recruiter-possibly the most important relationship you can develop as a

travel nurse-you can tailor your assignments to meet your professional goals and personal preferences.

You can even use travel nursing as your chance to try a different practice setting. If you’ve always been a hospital-based nurse, for example, you could ask

your recruiter to look for an assignment in an ambulatory care center, a skilled-nursing facility, or even a managed-care organization. The flexibility,

Hekman says, is “liberating.”

3. Benefit financially. Pay scales for travel nurses are comparable to-and in most cases, even better than-staff nursing positions. Plus, as a travel nurse,

you have the opportunity to earn bonuses for completing your assignments, for recruiting other travelers, and soon, depending on which travel nursing

company you sign with. One hospital in California, for example, was willing to offer a hefty bonus for travel nurses who would work over the Christmas

holidays. Hekman says that on average, a travel nurse can expect to earn 10% to 15% more than a staff nurse, factoring in bonuses and other incentives.

Benefits are attractive too. Medical and dental insurance coverage are pretty much a given. From there, the benefits vary by travel nursing company and may

include 401 (k) and matching contributions, free housing, travel reimbursement or a travel allowance, various types of insurance (such as life, disability,

and professional liability), free or low-cost continuing-education courses, and licensure reimbursement, among others.

4. Broaden your children’s horizons. Have children? Not a problem: Recruiters are willing to accommodate just about any situation, including finding housing

suitable for travelers with children. As a result, many travel nurses take their children-and their spouses-with them on the road. The experience can be

invaluable for the children, helping to expand their viewpoint. They have the chance to explore the country in more depth than they could on the typical

family vacation, plus they can interact with people from different cultures, something they might not get to do in their own hometown.

Don’t want to move your children around during the school year? You can still be a travel nurse. You could request an assignment with an easy commute-say,

in the next county or in a bordering state. Then in the summer, when the children are out of school, you can take to the open road.

There’s no question that travel nursing will test your mettle and help you grow, both personally and professionally. With just a few days’ orientation at

each assignment, you’ll draw on the confidence you have in your nursing skills and adapt quickly and efficiently to new situations in your new environment.

You’ll challenge your perceptions and open yourself to new experiences. And along the way, you’ll make memories that you’d never have if you’d stayed at

home.

Nursing Shortage Statistics part two

Posted on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011 at 4:16 pm.

Recent Reports

  • A Systematic Assessment of Strategies to Address the Nursing Faculty Shortage, U.S.
In the November/December 2008 issue of Nursing Outlook, Dr. Janet Allan and Jillian Aldebron assess a variety of efforts underway nationwide to alleviate the nursing faculty shortage, a primary driver of the larger nursing shortage. In the article, the authors highlight the most promising strategies in four domains – advocacy, educational partnerships, academic innovation, and external funding – and identify exemplars that are substantial, sustainable, and replicable.
  • Staff Nurses and Their Solutions to the Nursing Shortage
According to a study published in the Western Journal of Nursing Research in October 2006, staff nurses were asked to identify possible solutions to the nursing shortage. Top suggestions included creating career ladders, enhancing communication with administration, and increasing educational opportunities for nurses.
  • Hospitals’ Responses to Nurse Staffing Shortages
In a June 2006 study published in Health Affairs, researchers surveyed hospitals in 12 U.S. markets and found that the majority of respondents (97%) were making investments in nursing education as a long-term strategy to address the RN shortage. These investments include funding training programs and nurse orientations, partnering with schools of nursing, and providing financial support for nursing faculty. However, the authors state that “nursing school capacity remains an important barrier to future investments in nursing education” by hospitals, and they call on policymakers to make a larger financial commitment to expanding the nursing education system.
  • Faculty Shortages in Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Programs
AACN updated this white paper on nursing faculty shortages in June 2005. Authors of the report summarize the scope of the problem, discuss issues contributing to the shortage of faculty, and put forth strategies to expand the capacity of the current and future pool of nursing faculty.
  • President’s High Growth Job Training Initiative
In June 2005, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) awarded more than $12 million in grant-funding through this federal program, including $3 million to address the nurse faculty shortage. The latest round of funding brings the DOL’s commitment to health care workforce through the High-Growth program to more than $43 million. Details on all grant-funded initiatives are available online.

  • Nursing Shortage and Academic Health Centers: Assessing Options for Remedy in a Complex System
Released by the Association of Academic Health Centers in September 2002, this report calls for academic health centers to develop new strategies to address the nursing shortage and provide the leadership needed to identify long-term solutions. Proposed solutions include strengthening nursing education programs; expanding resources to educate new faculty; focusing on nursing research; developing networks with non-university based nursing programs; and evaluating new models of nursing care.

  • In Our Hands: How Hospital Leaders Can Build a Thriving Workforce
The American Hospital Association’s Commission on Workforce for Hospitals and Health Systems released this report in April 2002 that contained specific recommendations to help hospitals address health care worker shortages now and in the future. The commission called this shortage a potential “major national health care crisis.”

Nursing Shortage

| Download PDF version |

The United States is projected to have a nursing shortage that is expected to intensify as baby boomers age and the need for health care grows. Compounding the problem is the fact that nursing colleges and universities across the country are struggling to expand enrollment levels to meet the rising demand for nursing care.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is concerned about the shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs) and is working with schools, policy makers, kindred organizations, and the media to bring attention to this health care crisis. AACN is working to enact legislation, identify strategies, and form collaborations to address the nursing shortage. To keep stakeholders abreast of current statistics related to the shortage, this fact sheet has been developed along with a companion Web resource.

Current and Projected Shortage Indicators

  • In June 2011, Wanted Analytics reported that employers and staffing agencies posted more than 121,000 new job ads for Registered Nurses in May, up 46% from May 2010. About 10% of that growth, or 12,700, were ads placed for positions at general and surgical hospitals, where annual turnover rates for RNs average 14% according to a recent KPMG survey
  • According to a special issue of the Monthly Labor Review released in April 2011, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that “the health care industry added 428,000 jobs throughout the 18-month recession from December 2007 until June 2009, and has continued to grow at a steady rate since the end of the recession.” As the largest segment of the healthcare workforce, RNs were recruited to fill many of these new positions.
  • On April 1, 2011, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the healthcare sector of the economy is continuing to grow, despite significant job losses in recent months in nearly all major industries. Hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other ambulatory care settings added 37,000 new jobs in March 2011, the biggest monthly increase recorded by any employment sector. As the largest segment of the healthcare workforce, RNs likely will be recruited to fill many of these new positions. The BLS confirmed that 283,000 jobs have been added in the healthcare sector within the last year.
  • In October 2010, the Institute of Medicine released its landmark report on The Future of Nursing, initiated by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which called for increasing the number of baccalaureate-prepared nurses in the workforce to 80% and doubling the population of nurses with doctoral degrees. The current nursing workforce falls far short of these recommendations with only 50% of registered nurses prepared at the baccalaureate or graduate degree level.
  • In July 2010, the Tri-Council for Nursing released a joint statement on Recent Registered Nurse Supply and Demand Projections, which cautioned stakeholders about declaring an end to the nursing shortage. The downturn in the economy has lead to an easing of the shortage in many parts of the country, a recent development most analysts believe to be temporary. In the joint statement, the Tri-Council raises serious concerns about slowing the production of RNs given the projected demand for nursing services, particularly in light of healthcare reform. See www.aacn.nche.edu/Media/NewsReleases/2010/tricouncil.html
  • In December 2009, workforce analysts with the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected that more than 581,500 new RN positions will be created through 2018, which would increase the size of the RN workforce by 22%. Employment of RNs is expected to grow much faster than the average when compared to all other professions.
  • In the July/August 2009 Health Affairs, Dr. Peter Buerhaus and coauthors found that despite the current easing of the nursing shortage due to the recession, the U.S. nursing shortage is projected to grow to 260,000 registered nurses by 2025.  A shortage of this magnitude would be twice as large as any nursing shortage experienced in this country since the mid-1960s.  In the article titled The Recent Surge In Nurse Employment: Causes And Implications, the researchers point to a rapidly aging workforce as a primary contributor to the projected shortage.
  • In the November 26, 2008 Journal of the American Medical Association, workforce analyst Dr. Peter Buerhaus stated: “Over the next 20 years, the average age of the RN will increase and the size of the workforce will plateau as large numbers of RNs retire. Because demand for RNs is expected to increase during this time, a large and prolonged shortage of nurses is expected to hit the US in the latter half of the next decade.”
  • According to a report released by the American Health Care Association in July 2008, more than 19,400 RN vacancies exist in long-term care settings. These vacancies, coupled with an additional 116,000 open positions in hospitals reported by the American Hospital Association in July 2007, bring the total RN vacancies in the U.S. to more than 135,000. This translates into a national RN vacancy rate of 8.1%.
  • In a statement released in March 2008, The Council on Physician and Nurse Supply, an independent group of health care leaders based at the University of Pennsylvania, has determined that 30,000 additional nurses should be graduated annually to meet the nation’s healthcare needs, an expansion of 30% over the current number of annual nurse graduates.
  • According to a report released by the American Hospital Association in July 2007, U.S. hospitals need approximately 116,000 RNs to fill vacant positions nationwide. This translates into a national RN vacancy rate of 8.1%. The report, titled The 2007 State of America’s Hospitals – Taking the Pulse, also found that 44% of hospital CEOs had more difficulty recruiting RNs in 2006 than in 2005.
  • Based on finding from the Nursing Management Aging Workforce Survey released in July 2006 by the Bernard Hodes Group, 55% of surveyed nurses reported their intention to retire between 2011 and 2020. The majority of those surveyed were nurse managers.
  • In April 2006, officials with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) released projections that the nation’s nursing shortage would grow to more than one million nurses by the year 2020. In the report titled What is Behind HRSA’s Projected Supply, Demand, and Shortage of Registered Nurses?, analysts show that all 50 states will experience a shortage of nurses to varying degrees by the year 2015.

19 ideas for shift nurses to get more sleep!!!

Posted on Friday, July 29th, 2011 at 9:37 pm.

When you don’t get enough of it, you suffer. Big time.

No, we’re not talking about money, we’re talking about sleep. And if you’re among the third of working nurses who work the night shift, you probably don’t have the luxury of setting a typical sleep schedule. Sleep expert (and fellow nurse) Terry Cralle helps you identify whether you have what is called “shift work disorder,” suggests ways for night shift nurses (and their managers) to ensure a safe working environment, and offers up the following tips to help you get some shuteye.

Here are 19 things you can do at home to ensure you’re getting the sleep you need:

  1. Make sleep a health priority, like diet and exercise.
  2. Wear sunglasses if you’re commuting home in bright sunlight. Light is the most powerful zeitgeber, or influencer of the body’s circadian clock, and will negatively impact your ability to fall asleep. In contrast, once you wake up, go outside into the sun to cue your biological clock that it’s time to be awake and alert.
  3. Only go to bed when you’re sleepy. Don’t go to bed just because it’s “time.”
  4. Your body likes routines. Like light, your bedtime routine is a powerful zeitgeber. Establish a standard, relaxing, soothing bedtime ritual. Put on your pajamas, wash your face and brush your teeth to signal your brain you’re preparing for sleep. Play soothing music; take a warm bath for 30 minutes, one hour before bedtime; read a relaxing book or magazine. Allow enough time to unwind and relax, but try to go to bed as soon as possible after your shift, ideally within two hours. Don’t fall asleep in your recliner or sofa with a television blasting in the background.
  5. Try to maintain a consistent and regular sleep schedule on work days AND days off/weekends. Keeping a routine helps your body know when to be alert and when to sleep.
  6. Stop working at any task and attempt to resolve anything potentially stimulating, worrisome or upsetting one hour before bedtime. Writing down your emotional worries and thoughts in a journal may help release these concerns from your mind. Learn a relaxation technique, such as progressive muscle relaxation, and practice it in bed.
  7. Use your bedroom only for sleeping and sex. Keep it stress and clutter-free. No paperwork, bills, unfolded laundry, TV, electronics or pets.
  8. A darkened room signals your brain that it’s time to sleep. So keep your bedroom as dark as possible. Blackout shades, heavy curtains and eye masks can help. Standard window shades let too much light in. Cover an illuminated alarm clock, especially if you’re a “clock watcher,” or remove it, if necessary. If you need to get up, use a small nightlight instead of turning on bright lights.
  9. Eliminate noise with earplugs, a fan or a white noise machine. Turn off or unplug the phone. Install carpeting or sound-absorbing curtains, drapes or shades.
  10. Keep your room well ventilated and the temperature on the cool side, ideally between 60 and 65 degrees (range: below 75 and above 54 degrees).
  11. Invest in a good mattress. A poor or an old mattress can disrupt your sleep. The average mattress lifespan is about seven years.
  12. Make your sleep time sacred. Enlist the help of your family and friends and request that they respect your sleep. Put a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the front door, so friends and delivery people won’t knock or ring the doorbell. Have family and friends wear headphones when watching TV or listening to music. Ban vacuuming, dish washing, lawn mowing, loud games and any other noisy activity. Tell your kids not to go into your room unless it’s an emergency, and be sure to specify exactly what is and is not an emergency. Schedule appointments outside of your sleep period.
  13. Get at least 7.5 to 8.5 hours of sleep per day. Try to make up for lost sleep on days off.
  14. Nicotine and caffeine are stimulants. Alcohol, while initially a sedative, causes arousals and awakenings, sweats and nightmares after it’s metabolized. Ideally, avoid caffeine-containing beverages and food such as coffee, tea, sodas and chocolate at least six to eight hours before bedtime. If you’re having problems falling asleep in the morning, avoid caffeine after midnight. Avoid cigarettes before bedtime and during awakenings, and alcohol at least five hours before bedtime.
  15. Don’t go to bed too hungry or too full. Avoid eating two hours prior to bedtime. If needed, have a glass of milk or light snack before bed. Milk contains the amino acid L-tryptophan, which research has shown helps people fall asleep. Avoid consuming protein at bedtime, which may be harder to digest. Don’t drink excessive fluids prior to bedtime to avoid having to get up to urinate.
  16. Don’t lie awake in bed for more than 20 minutes to avoid developing a negative association between your bedroom and sound sleep. After 20 minutes, leave the room and do something relaxing, such as reading, listening to music or watching television. Don’t return to bed until you feel sleepy.
  17. Schedule 20 minutes of regular aerobic exercise and work it into your normal routine, but not within three hours of going to bed. Exercising raises the body temperature and can be alerting too close to bedtime. Walk or bike to work instead of driving; climb the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Consider exercising before work or during breaks to help you stay alert on the job. Keep a resistance band or hand weights at work for strength training. Find an exercise buddy to make exercising more fun and keep you motivated. Exercise will improve your sleep, energy level, mood, stress and cardiovascular fitness.
  18. Address your partner’s sleep issues, if present. One partner’s sleep problem causes the other to lose, on average, nearly one hour of sleep a night.
  19. Begin altering your sleep schedule three days in advance of a shift change. On the third day prior to the shift change and each subsequent day, postpone your bedtime and wake time by one to two hours compared to the previous day. By the time you begin the new shift, your circadian sleep-wake rhythm will be reoriented. For example, if you’re on a 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. shift and moving to an 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. schedule, do the following:
  • Three days prior to your shift change, rather than sleeping from 3 a.m. to 11 a.m., postpone your bedtime to 5 a.m. and sleep to 1 p.m.
  • Two days prior to the shift change, sleep from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • One day prior to shift change, sleep from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • On the day of the shift change, sleep from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tax advantages to being a traveling nurse

Posted on Friday, July 15th, 2011 at 9:45 pm.

Travel Nursing Tax Advantage Plan

Travel Nurse Tax Advantage Programs - How do they workTax Advantage programs allow you to receive a tax free reimbursements to cover meals & incidentals and lodging expenses or to receive tax free Travel Nursing Company supplied housing.

To participate in the Tax Advantage Program you need to maintain a residence as a renter or owner in your permanent resident location and state with associated expenses and be working away from this residence on a temporary assignment living in a separate temporary residence. This permanent residence is called a Permanent Tax Home as defined by the IRS.

You should have connections to this address such as: Drivers License, Insurances, Professional License, Voters Registration, Property Taxes and other various bills connected to the Permanent Tax Home. It is advisable to return there between assignments if possible, apply for jobs there, do business there, even work there if possible.

Generally if you reside in another state or same state, different location, for more than a year you can lose your Permanent Tax Home status. Keep documentation of these activities to keep the information organized and easily at hand if you needed it. The Travel companies usually just have you fill out a form verifying you Permanent Tax Home.

The Travel Nursing Company will give you a tax free reimbursement per day that you are on an assignment staying in temporary housing away from your Permanent Tax Home (Meals & Incidentals and Lodging or Company supplied Tax Free Housing). This per day reimbursement is different where ever you go. The Federal Government has a web site, Domestic Per Diem Rates – US General Services Administration that supplies this information.

The rates on this website are in reality reimbursements figured for government employees traveling to, staying in hotels and/or eating in other cities for work purposes. The costs a Traveler will incur on a daily basis may not be as much depending on various factors generally because the Traveler is usually staying at least 3 months and buying groceries mostly instead of eating out for every meal. That could be different if you are on a short term contract such as a Strike.

Some Travel Nurse Agencies may not use the max rate all the time unless it reflects more in reality the true costs. This Tax Free Reimbursement is separate from your Pay Rate which IS taxed.

Some Travel Nurse Companies that are new to this get confused and think the reimbursement is per day that you work but that is wrong. It is per day that you are on assignment residing in that area in temporary housing away from your Permanent Tax Home.

There is no 50 or 80 mile radius rule with the IRS. Those rules are more so rules with Travel Nursing Companies and/or Hospitals to set some standard for being away from home or to prevent perm or potential perm staff in the area from converting to Travelers (Hospital Rule).

Travel Nursing Agencies if they are supplying temporary housing will only use the the meals and incidentals max rate to figure the tax free reimbursement although you will not be taxed for your housing supplied.

If you are receiving a housing stipend instead of the Travel Nurse Agency supplying the housing, the Travel Nurse Company will use both the per day Lodging Rate and the per day Meal & Incidentals rate to calculate your total tax free reimbursements depending on how those rates reflect true costs for you in that area.

Below are some examples of how some companies figure Tax Advantage reimbursements.

Housing supplied:

Government site reports a per day rate for Meals & Incidentals of $25/day for a certain locale.

They are saying the maximum you would spend per day for Meals & Incidentals is $25

$25/day X 7 days = $175/week $25 X 30 = $750/ month (Tax Free Reimbursements)

Alot of Travel Nursing Companies will also figure it into a virtual pay rate to see the actual value that you get in terms of $’s/hour.

Let’s say you work 36 hours/week with a pay rate of $28/hour and you get $475/week in tax free reimbursements (Meals & Incidentals + Housing Stipend for this example)

$475/week divided by 36 hours/week worked

= $13.19/hr Virtual pay rate

$28/hr Actual Pay Rate + $13.19/hr Virtual pay rate

= $38.19/hr (Actual pay rate + Virtual pay rate)

This is only a way to for you to see total value. Your pay check stub or contract should avoid the above language because tax free reimbursements are not pay rates.

If you are supplied housing by the Travel Nurse Company you could still convert it to a virtual pay rate if you know the housing costs + meals and incidentals reimbursement.

If you were Not a Tax Advantage Traveler you would have to pay taxes on your supplied housing or housing stipend and you could not receive Meals & Incidental Tax Free Reimbursements either.

If you are NOT offered the Tax Advantage Program but you DO maintain a Permanent Tax Home you can deduct expenses that are above what is covered by the Travel Nursing Agency at the end of the year so keep a record of these expenses and keep receipts.

Even as a Tax Advantage Traveler you need to keep track of reasonable expenses above what is covered by the Travel Nursing Company such as Medical Expenses, Travel Costs, Mileage to location, Mileage to and from Facility from Temporary Housing times number of trips.

When you deduct these things the dollar amount that ends up in your tax return is not as much as you would get receiving the Tax Advantage tax free reimbursements. That is why people are are attracted to Tax Advantage Programs.

Blog Questions for Nurses

Posted on Thursday, July 7th, 2011 at 10:46 pm.

Questions to ask the Travel Nursing Recruiter….

Are the hours per week guaranteed?

While you are on assignment and the census is real low and you get called off will they still pay you?

Is there any floating required to other units? What units? If you don’t want to float make sure it is written in the contract.

Is there a completion Bonus? How much? Can you work it into a reimbursement or per diem or into the pay rate (bonuses are usually taxed more than your pay) ?

Is there a renewal bonus? (If this is a renewal or extension contract) Negotiate for this because the facility would have a trained staff and no additional Travel pay for another Traveler.

What type of Unit is it? Staffing? Other Support Staff?

What shifts will you work? Will you have to float to other shifts or do rotating shifts?

Will you have to be on call? What is the on call pay?

Base pay rate per hour? Overtime pay rate? Holiday pay?

What Holidays does the Travel Nursing Company have?

Will you have to be Charge RN? How often? Is there Charge Pay? How Much?

Possible Extensions? What is the max amount of extensions allowed? How much time will you have to be gone before you come back after you are maxed out?

Is there a clause to prevent you from being hired as a perm employee? If there is for how long? Can the Hospital pay a fee to release the clause? Ask that they delete it which they may if they want to sign you.

If you are sick can you make up shifts? Will they deduct for Housing costs related to the time you are sick? Can you extend contract if you are sick for example a week? (some companies won’t bother you if it is maybe 2-3 days in an assignment or will work with you if it is more so it is wise to discuss this possibility).

If you extend can you have some time off between? Will you be charged for housing costs if you still want to maintain the same housing? Depends how long but if you have to pay see if you can exchange a bonus for these costs. If you may need sometime in the middle of an assignment for something very important and brief give your recruiter and manager forewarning and come up with a possible plan.

Supplied Car Rental or Car Rental Reimbursement? If you don’t take how much more paid?

Airfare paid? How much? If you don’t take how much more paid?

Travel Pay? How much?

Do they do the Tax Advantage Program? Details?

Travel Nurse Questions

Posted on Wednesday, July 6th, 2011 at 10:28 pm.

Note: Many of the questions you asked the recruiter regarding the facility need to be asked to the Hiring Manager too. This is important because they may have a better answer and so the recruiter and the hiring manager are reading from the same script. There is a contract between the Facility and the Travel

Nursing Company that you don’t see. This contract may vary from the one you have between Your Travel Nurse Company and You. For this reason you need to verify things. Also if the Hiring Manager is not the direct Manager of the Unit I would ask to speak with that manager if possible. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This will also give you a chance to read that person and their management style.

Staffing Grid? Or Formula?

Floating?

On call?

Mandatory Overtime?

Shift or shifts working? Can you get your shifts back to back the same days each week or spaced out etc.? (Now is the time to negotiate this and IF they agree you may want this written in the contract)

Duties?

Breaks? Lunch?

Assistive Staff? What do they do?

Charting method?

Dress Code?

Inspections?

Charge?

Report procedure?

How many Travelers? Have any extended?

Possible Extensions?

Various procedures depending upon your specialty?

Orientation ? Classroom hours? Orientation Hours on each unit you will work? If there are classes to take later in your Travel Nursing Assignment will they adjust your schedule if you don’t want to go over hours and agree to let you know well in advance?

Layout of the unit, size of Nurses Station, interview rooms, other necessary rooms?

Turn over of patients? Length of Stay? Average census?

Ask why they are using Travelers and how Travelers are treated by the perm staff. You may want to wait until later in the conversation to ask this one and pay close attention to the response noting any hesitations.

NOTE: Scrutinize assignments that show up on the radar frequently throughout the year which may be a sign that the hospital was not Traveler Friendly at all. Get feedback from other Travelers.

Health Care Industries Avoid Costly Overtime and Staff Burnout When Using Meridian Medical Staffing

Posted on Monday, February 21st, 2011 at 4:30 pm.

Avoid costly overtime pay and staff burnout. Hospitals usually spend more on overtime than using temporary staff.  Cutting back on outside staff can also cause staff burnout. Hospitals have cut back on health care supplier usage, however, there is still a nursing shortage. This usually means hospitals are asking their staff to work harder, causing this staff burnout or spending more money on overtime.  Planning ahead with good staffing suppliers will ensure adequate coverage. Call Meridian Medical Staffing today at 800-245-9414 or visit at  www.meridianmedicalstaffing.com

Traveling Nurse Benefits

Posted on Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 at 7:34 am.

The greatest benefit of taking a job as a traveler is you can see other places in the country, or the world if you choose and get paid more than a staff nurse does. Aside from the pay nurses get a chance to work with doctors and other nurses from different backgrounds, which is just as enriching as the new location they get to explore.

Nurses who consider traveling, will enjoy the fact that they can travel with pets, spouses and even their children. Many couples who are in the medical field get travel contracts together, so they are both able to make an income at the same hospital. Pets are almost always allowed while traveling and a recruiter is usually prepared to provide or find housing that allows a nurse to have pets. The pet deposit is usually provided by the nurse as well as any upgrade to the standard housing, such as a second bedroom or additional furnishings.

Look no further than Meridian Medical Staffing for your next opportunity to travel this beautiful world as a nurse. Visit www.meridianmedicalstaffing.com daily for your next traveling nurse opportunity.

Meridian Medical Leader in Healthcare Staffing Industry

Posted on Thursday, July 22nd, 2010 at 5:49 am.

Meridian Medical Staffing can show you ways in which to save money and time and burnout of your nursing staff.  Meridian Medical Staffing has remained a time tested leader in the Healthcare staffing industry.  Visit our website for more information at www.meridianmedicalstaffing.com and call 800-245-9414

Avoid costly overtime pay. The amount your hospital spends on overtime can end up being much more expensive than using temporary staff. I’ve worked with several hospitals that were attempting to reduce their spending on staffing by cutting back on outside staff. However, because these hospitals were inappropriately managing their overtime hours they ended up spending more money than before.

Meridian Medical Staffing-Can Save Facilities Money

Posted on Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 at 5:43 am.

Employers- Meridian Medical Staffing can save your facility money! Please call 800-245-9414 for more information and visit our website at www.meridianmedicalstaffing.com /Traveling Nurses, Occupational Therapists, SLP, PTA

It’s not always more expensive. Lets face it. Employees are expensive. Depending on what metrics you are using – employers can spend up to an extra 35 – 50% on top of an employees salary for benefits and other overhead costs, not to mention costs associated with attrition. So, with that, consider the typical markup of a healthcare staffing supplier (35 – 50%). Remember, the client only pays for time worked and orientation costs (in some cases). There are no associated recruitment, hiring or attrition costs. Therefore, using temporary staff in a well planned and managed way can actually end up saving you quite a bit of money.

Medical Staffing For Healthcare Facilities/Traveling Nurses

Posted on Thursday, July 15th, 2010 at 5:08 am.

Meridian Medical Staffing can help you!  Please visit our website at www.meridianmedicalstaffing.com  or give us a call for more information at 800-245-9414 about our traveling nurses, Occupatonal therapists, physical therapists, traveling LPN and Speech language therapists. Whether it be New Jersey, California, Arizona or anywhere in the US, please call us today.

    About Meridian Medical Staffing

Posted on Friday, April 16th, 2010 at 8:50 pm.

Meridian Medical Staffing is showing a 25.1% YTD over 2009. 2009 showed a 20% growth over 2008. Shortage of nurses in the U.S. growing between 2000 and 2005, the shortage of qualified nurses in the U.S. increased from 110,800 to 218,800; in 2005, 10% of all demand went unmet as a result of this shortage. As nurses become more and more scarce relative to demand, hospitals and healthcare facilities turn to staffing agencies like Meridian Medical Staffing to meet their staffing needs. On the other hand, as competition increases for qualified nurses, companies have to offer higher compensation and more attractive benefits to stay competitive. In 2007, $23.9 million of the $35.4-million increase in operating costs for the nurse and allied healthcare staffing segment was due to increases in wages, housing costs, and health insurance costs. The aging U.S. population needs more medical care. Projected growth rates for Americans age 64 or younger and 65 or older (U.S. Census Bureau estimates) According to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of Americans age 65 or over is growing faster than the general population. As a wave of baby boomers hits 65, this growth is expected to outpace growth of people age 64 and younger by as much as four times by the year 2020. Older people require much more healthcare per capita than younger age groups, meaning that the U.S. healthcare industry is having to grow to accommodate the additional demand. As hospitals and healthcare facilities find themselves short of nurses, physicians, and other medical professionals, staffing Meridian is the represents the medium size firm by revenue in the three fastest-growing segments of the healthcare staffing market: travel nurse and allied healthcare.

Increase in jobs first two weeks in January!

Posted on Friday, February 5th, 2010 at 7:10 pm.

Last week, I shared with everyone that the Department of Labor predicted an increase in nursing jobs in the next six years. Their prediction was that there will be more jobs created in the Nursing Industry than any other industry.

In December, it was our hope (our fingers is crossed) that with the New Year and new budgets we would find a new time for our nurses and new opportunities. I wanted to share with you all today a bit of what we have seen as far as job orders in the last couple of weeks.

As expected, the number of job orders has increased. We are seeing more and more job orders each day! That is very exciting and great news to be able to share with our travel nursing community.

We are also seeing jobs in locations that we have not seen for sometime, California, Hawaii, Iowa etc. Those few and far between locations are well on the way to becoming regular, weekly or even daily locations for job orders.

I have said it before and I will share it with you all again, if you are interested and available to travel CONTACT US! You may reach us at (800) 245-9414 or via email at info@meridianmedicalstaffing.com. Let a recruiter know your intersets and qualifications. The jobs are out there and the competition is stiff right now. You will want to have a well prepared resume (there is help with preparing your resume in last weeks blogs), a complete and UPDATED skills checklist for each specialty you are qualified for, references are a must to set you apart from the pack and be sure your recruiter has your ACTIVE state license numbers. All of the above information in required and in these times, missing information removes your profile from those that will be reviewed!

With all the new and fantastic opportunities on the horizon we hope to find something great for each travel nurse in our community, keep in touch! We are here to serve you in your job search!

It’s that time again, TAX TIME!

Posted on Thursday, February 4th, 2010 at 7:09 pm.

We are by no means tax advisors here at Meridian Medical Staffing but we would like to share a few tidbits that we have learned over the years for our travel nursing community.

Taxes are a daunting tax for almost everyone I know, its always good to have things brought up that you may or may not have already given some attention to. Here are some things that are deductible for nurses, please note this is a short list and the complete list as well as important tax forms that may be important to you can be found at www.irs.gov

    Deductible Items:

    – Stethoscopes
    – Scrubs purchased for work
    – Subscription fees to nursing associations
    – Travel expenses, not reimbursed by your travel company
    – Nursing License fees
    – Any fees for continuing education

… and the list goes on. Be sure to visit www.irs.gov for more information and to ensure you are ready this tax season!

    Stand out from the crowd!

Posted on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010 at 7:08 pm.

Common Characteristics of travel nurses that stand out!

What does it take to not only become a great travel nurse but thrive in the travel nursing industry? There are a few standout characteristics of the best of the best, we have decided to share those with you here…

First, as many nurses understand, this has not been an easy industry in the past few months. There are those that have endured and endurance of course is a trait that is often difficult and stressful. Nursing in the travel industry is ever changing and those who make it are steadfast and endure numerous situations as well as economic trends.

Flexibility. I often wonder when working with our nurses how they do it? How is it that from place to place, unit to unit they remain so flexible and always positive regardless of the situation. I believe that those who have been the MOST flexible have found the most success in this industry during a time when facilities not only requested but expected an ICU RN to float to Med Surge. Travel nurses jump into situations in which they must be flexible, picking up call, variations of shifts, overtime and weekends. The best of the best, will take it all on and with grace.

Strong Experience. It is because of the numerous unique and trying situations that travel nurses endure each day, each new assignment and on each new unit that they are some of the most experienced and well rounded nurses out there. Most have worked in a number of units, a number of different sizes of hospitals, severity of cases and a vast array of medical situations. The environment of a travel nurse is always changing, requiring constant learning and adapting to all situations. This also makes travel nurses some of the best of the best at thinking on their feet and problem solving.

Organized. Boy, do travel nurses have it together. Paperwork, credentials, etc. Travel nurses keep it all close and ready to access at any time. Calm, cool and collected. Always on the ball.

Love of people, great people skills! Travel nurses most likely know and encounter more people whether it be patients, supervisors, peers etc in 13 weeks than the average person does in a year. A new location and a new environment every thirteen weeks, travel nurses are great with people, very well liked and able to adapt to social situations as well as new work environments. With the changing assignments and environments, travel nurses encounter just as many different personalities. Rarely, does this phase a travel nurse who handles nearly any situation with a positive, cheerful interaction.

Assertive. Travel nurses certainly are not shy. I am not sure how most folks I know would handle jumping into a new place every 13 or so weeks. Travel nurses jump in with both feet, hit the ground running and ready to learn and ask questions. This is common of nurses in general because of the need to learn and grab attention from others when necessary.

Just as travel nurses are assertive, they are extremely motivated. Motivated to learn, move, find a new assignment, float to a new floor etc. Most love a new challenge and a change of pace or environment.

Travel nursing can be a fantastic and exciting career! I enjoy each day working with our nurses and learning more and more about the industry just as you all are out there! Travel nurses really are the cream of the crop and I am happy to serve such an upstanding, courageous and strong community!

    Composing Your Resume

Posted on Monday, February 1st, 2010 at 7:08 pm.

    Composing a Resume

Tips for displaying your qualifications in a fantastic resume

The competition is stiff out there for travel nurses and more and more we are finding that facilities are looking at the resume provided by the candidate more than ever! A resume may be what will set you apart from others when applying for your next assignment, be sure your resume has what it takes, is clear, easy to read and includes the following:

Full Name: address and contact information. Be sure to include any previous name, most notably, if your licensures need to be verified and are under a previous last name.

Objective: Your objective is clearly to obtain the position in which you have applied for. Here quickly state your unique qualifications that set you apart from the rest of the pack. Tell the hiring manager exactly why you are the ideal candidate.

Work Experience: This should be a list of work experience in chronological order, starting with the most recent, since you have graduated nursing school. Briefly describe and include, job title, dates, facility, supervisor and supervisor phone number and your responsibilities at each facility.

Education: Again, starting with most recent include school, degree earned, year(s) attended. Also include certifications and trainings such as TNCC, PALS, ACLS etc as well as any specialty nursing credentials you may have.

Affiliations: Include professional leadership and membership affiliations here.

Skills: If you are an instructor of a certain training course, include that here; also include your skill level and the number of years of experience.

Languages: More and more we are finding that hospitals need bilingual nursing staff. Include the languages and level of proficiency for the hiring manager; you do not want to let great knowledge go unnoticed.

Additional Information: Feel free to include a brief statement at the end of your resume if you feel you have outstanding qualities that have not yet been address in the previous sections of your resume.

Happy Resume Writing & Travel Safe!

On Assignment – Internet & Phone Services

Posted on Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 at 6:59 pm.

    Internet Services

If you are anything like me, going without internet for long periods of time can cause some distress. We live in a time where so much of our communication takes place on the world wide web. Once you arrive at your travel nursing assignment you may wish to keep in touch with family, friends, the happenings of the world with the use of internet at your new location. Typically, internet is something, for liability reasons is left up to the individual during an assignment. http://reviews.cnet.com/internetaccess will allow you to search for the internet service provider in the area by phone number or zip code. There are becoming so many providers out there and it is always different in every location, here is a fast easy way to eliminate the chase and find the one provider you are looking for right away!

For many of our travel nurses, there are families and possibly even children at home, check out skype.com to be sure you don’t miss a single important moment at home!

    Phone Service

As previously mentioned, I can relate to those who dislike being without internet, those of us more than likely, also dislike being without a phone. We are all utilizing cell phones these days more than land lines. It is a good idea to check with your current provider before making a long road trip or relocating to be sure that you will have coverage along your travel route as well as once you arrive to your new location.

www.wirelessadvisor.com will allow you to search for a wireless provider in your new location, or any location by zip code. Once again, this will save a lot of hunting and phone calling with one easy click. Here are more helpful links to provider that may be able to facilitate your needs while on your travel nursing assignment.
